Screening calls for help with psychosocial background and guidance to adequate resources

This thesis investigates emergency calls that contain overt and covert psychosocial backgrounds addressed to Emergency Communiation Centers. It designs potential solutions based on a referral to the discipline of Social Work. Analyzing typical approaches and handling such calls for help discloses possible functions and roles in screening and guidance. The aim is to develop a concept how to site Social Work and interdisciplinary teamwork into Emergency Communication Centers and Helplines. These efforts promote the integral aspect of primary care close to the community which begins with the first call for help. The exploration of causal mechanism was organized as an empirical reconstructive four-step-approach. Interviews with participants to selected cases and expert´s interviews have been performed for investigation purpose and qualitative content analysis for evaluation.
Findings
 Calls for help with psychosocial background in Emergency Communication Centers are causing unsure decision requests by involved professionals
 Integral assessment could successfully be initiated starting with the first call for help by identifying and flagging characteristic issues with markers.
 A following case treatment requires professional case understanding and consideration of specific circumstances assessed on the phone.
 To flag characteristic issuesat the entry point of the health system enables an intended alliance between professions and organizations including healthcare and social welfare.
 Directed integration of different professions to a case requires a declared statement of responsibility.
 Through positioning Social Work strategically into Emergency Communication Centers or Helplines, respective access to social support systems will naturally improve.
 Emergency Social Worker could perform advanced assessment to close possible gaps in between emergency medicine, crisis intervention and social counselling.</ns1:description>
