<ns1:description language="en">This thesis deals with the topic of ethnic marketing in Austria, i.e. with marketing for Austria‟s ethnic minorities. Although ethnic marketing has huge economic potential, it is nonetheless practised by only a few local companies. The aim of this thesis is therefore to identify success factors for ethnic marketing in Austria in order to contribute to the rudi-mentary state of scientific research, and to help Austrian businesses to overcome their inhibitions.
The thesis is divided into a theoretical and an empirical component. Within the theoretical component, the term “culture” is discussed on the basis of ethnic marketing by Hofstede‟s model of national cultural differences and Hall‟s Low- and High-Context cul-ture model. Afterwards the theory deals with the process of market segmentation and cultivation. On the basis of this theoretical discussion, six qualitative expert interviews were carried out, most of which were with operators of ethnic marketing agencies. The subsequent analysis was conducted deductively in correspondence with Mayring‟s qualitative content analysis.
The empirical study revealed various success factors that could be divided into general and culture-related factors. The general success factors include: cooperation with experts and dealing intensively with the cultural characteristics of the target group; conceptualisation of new advertising campaigns rather than adapting existing ones; demonstration of appreciation for the target group; practice of effective risk management; regular pursuit of ethnic marketing activities; and testing of new campaigns before they enter the market. Some culture-related success factors (especially for the Austrian market with its biggest ethnic minority groups from Turkey and the former Yugoslavia) are the conveyance of collectivistic moral values and ideas, the use of emotional advertising appeals instead of cognitive ones and consideration of the target groups‟ increased willingness to take risks, as well as traditional gender roles and the importance of status symbols. Other success factors include the careful use of religion, customs, traditions and culture-specific symbols, as well as the proper handling of foreign language and the use of trustworthy testimonials of the ethnic target group. The importance of word-of-mouth recommendation must also be considered. Success factors within the distribution policy include sales through “ethnic shops”, employment of foreign-language speaking personnel, and sensitisation of existing personnel for the target group´s culture. Furthermore, the right choice of communication instruments as well as accurate market segmentation is critical for the success of ethnic marketing activities.</ns1:description>
