<ns1:description language="de">"Working at an empowering level in the context of variations of sex characteristics". About the understanding of peer counselling of the counseling center for variations in sex characteristics VAR.GES. Participatory research report with learnings for research practice and impulses for social work. Gebhart Nicole, Haller Paul, Huber Sonja, Steiner Julia Social work promotes self-determination and autonomy of people. In order to meet these demands in the context of intersex or variations of sex characteristics, social work must enter into dialogue with self-advocates. This needs to be done in order to work on a level that is empowering for people with diverse sex characteristics or intersex people. Participatory research offers promising approaches for this. Working in ways that are empowering for people with diverse sex characteristics – this approach also reflects the understanding of peer counselling of the counselling center on variations of sex characteristics VAR.GES. Our research report is based on a community-based participatory research project that was conducted together with VAR.GES. The research question, which reads as follows: "What understanding of peer counseling underlies the counseling work of the counseling center VAR.GES and which aspects of it can be action-guiding for a counseling concept?" and the research design were developed together with peer counselors of the counseling center VAR.GES. In order to answer the research question, a total of seven qualitative, partially standardized interviews were conducted – five of them with peer counselors and two of them with a trainer and facilitator of a qualification course on peer counseling in the context of variations of sex characteristics. Together with the peer counselors, reflection booklets for participants of a qualification course for peer counselors were elaborated. Various artifacts were also used as data. The circular research process methodologically follows the Grounded Theory approach by Anselm Strauss and Juliet Corbin (1996) and the concept of the “strengthening partnership”, an approach of participatory research, and was designed on the basis of Hella von Unger (2014). According to the participatory approach, the goal is twofold: To initiate change in practice while grounding it in scientific evidence. The practice and knowledge goals of this work were formulated together with VAR.GES peer counsellors. The results of this research report include general aspects of the counselling understanding of VAR.GES, as well as specific aspects of peer counseling in the context of variations of sex characteristics. Furthermore, main elements of a qualified peer counseling understanding are elaborated, aspects of a peer counseling concept for VAR.GES are discussed, and practical projects from the research project are presented.
