    <ns1:description language="de">Fachhochschule St. Pölten, Masterarbeit 2022, Studiengang Soziale Arbeit</ns1:description>
<ns1:description language="de">Only 12% of the students in Austria have a disability, 0,4% of them have a hearing disability and 1% of approximately 10 000 Deaf people in Austria graduated from university. The general education system is strongly oralistic, which is why there are communicative barriers for Deaf. These go hand in hand with massive educational deficits, which is why many Deaf do not attend university. The aim of the master's thesis is to uncover and present institutional and structural selection mechanisms in university access and progression. Against the background of the professional-ethical principles of social work, such as responsibility and respect for diversity as well as the selectivity of the educational system, this master's thesis examines how to deal with diversity in own social work studies at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences. This involves questions about the design of university access and remaining in the study for people with hearing disabilities in general and in particular at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences in the study of social work. Attention will be paid to which barriers and selection mechanisms need to be observed and which changes are necessary to create more inclusion in access to and in studies. In addition, the research focus lies in the role of disability in Deafness, hearing disability and sign languages. Specifically, the thesis asks what understanding of Deafness, Deaf culture and sign languages is given in the social work studies at the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences and how these topics are taught and which actions and perspectives can be derived from the results for access and progress. The work is based on a qualitative research design. Qualitative interviews were conducted, some with Deaf self-advocates. A main theory can be presented using the grounded theory evaluation method. The lack of knowledge about Deaf topics is one of the most influential barriers and accompanies the entire access to university and remaining in the study. It is, for example, the basis for an auditory attitude towards the Deaf. The St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences is based on the hearing norm, Deafness and sign languages are not discussed. Therefore, this master's thesis pleads for a subject on Deaf topics in the study of social work.</ns1:description>
