<ns1:description language="en">The biographical method in social work and its application on elderly clients from former Yugoslavia who have experienced war and flight. Julia Mayerhofer University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten, Bachelor’s degree programme in Social Work Background In the field of social work, the biographical method on people from former Yugoslavia has not yet been researched. Simultaneously, their health constitution is far worse than that of the Austrian majority population. Research Question Which benefits does the biographical method in social work offer, when applied on elderly clients who have fled the war in former Yugoslavia and therefore undergone traumatic experiences? Research Objective To gain insights about the benefits of the biographical method for both elderly clients from former Yugoslavia and social workers. Methods The data was collected within the frame of individual guided interviews and examined according to Froschauer and Lueger’s system analysis. Central results The biographical method can encourage clients’ self-reflection and therefore assist with the development of new perspectives and opportunities for further action. Additionally, the application of the biographical method can support social workers in their attempt to understand the concepts of norms and values, as well as individual behaviours of their clients. Keywords Biographical method; former Yugoslavia; flight; war; migration; psychic trauma; social worker</ns1:description>
